We massage therapists provide an experience for our clients that connects them with their humanness. Massage therapy, using the power of the hands, the emotion of respect, love, compassion and caring, is what consciousness-based therapy is. It, in my opinion, is closer to a not-truly-caring model. This one action element is largely missing in the authoritative medical model of therapeutic intervention. The massage therapist listens to the client and believes them. Massage therapy is not an either-or but rather a yes-and process of therapeutic intervention that places the client as the highest authority for what they require to get well. I believe the absence of evidence is not evidence of absence of a healing process in progress.

It is this consciousness-driven-therapy model that allows massage therapy to help people in many ways that evidence-based models cannot see, measure, or recognize. Massage therapy has the unique capacity to function in both an evidence-based model and a consciousness-based model. When we as massage therapist are touching a client, we sense vibrations, or vibes, that are emitting from that person. as it is to know and understand the role of energy and vibrational frequencies. Thus, it is equally important that we know the sciences such as anatomy, kinesiology, physiology, neurology, etc. The wonderful aspect of massage therapy and bodywork is we, as professionals, work with both elements. Intuition is our subconscious mind connecting with infinite intelligence, and both are a matter of energy. I suggest that our profession is judged by how we educate ourselves and how we connect our techniques and science knowledge with our intuition. I believe a society is judged by how it educates its young. There is SO much more to explore here.Massage therapy is a powerful solution to support massage clients returning to themselves-and returning to the human experience of love, compassion, care, respect and being heard. Rarely are the right and left side stories the same. Another division could be that the right side is how one relates to the world and others and the left is more of relating to self and Spirit. The left foot stores more of the internal or self representation – it contains the vital energy for the moral and spiritual growth and understanding.

For the far majority of people the right foot will store the past and how one is in the world. The right-foot and left-foot toes do represent different aspects of one’s story. Significant past and present issues need to be acknowledged and reconciled to prevent permanent and long-term damage. When the toes become exhausted and weighted down, you can bet that the person is feeling that same way about their life. The ideal angle for the toes is an upright, yet flexible position. Toes that point directly ahead suggest confidence and a forthright approach to life. The angle of the toes on the earth reveals the person’s innate shyness or outgoingness. Rigid feet often belong to rigid people-harsh, strict, precise and inflexible. However, if the foot energy is too flexible, there could be a tendency toward being too easily manipulated. Flexible feet indicate a person who adapts easily and willing to the life’s ups and downs. When reading the toes take into consideration all of the characteristics and shape. One of the questions that always come up is, “Do the toes change as the story changes?” And the answer is, “Absolutely!”

The ever changing characteristics of the feet, toes and nails provide valuable clues to the inner struggles or inner resolve.Īs you observe the toes, you are invited to ask deep probing questions. The toes of people who have had more challenging lives will appear ‘toe-tied,’ depicting the lumps and bumps of the personal and emotional lives they have lived up to this point in time.
